See AllGood but not perfect
Sadly, I've had to stop playing this immersive game before I could complete it. Unfortunately it simply won't load past a point in the game and crashes evrytime I try to continue. I've tried reinstalling and loading earlier saved games. With regret, the problem still occurs. The game still requires an update to fix a couple of minor bugs. If the developers can sort it out, then its definately worth playing.
Better Than the First
KOTOR was, in many ways, the perfect Star Wars RPG. It was fun, it was high stakes and it was a clear-cut case of good vs. evil. KOTOR II exceeds this.
KOTOR II sees you play as one of the sole remaining jedi in a galaxy that wants them to stay buried. Moral ambiguity is everywhere. Unlike the previos game, you’re not fighting to save the galaxy from evil, or to rule it with an iron first, you’re fighting for your own survival.
The game starts off with you awakening on the mining world of Peragus II. The miners are dead and someone drugged you into a coma. This brilliant opening sequence sets the tone for the rest of the game: you’ve been away too long and things have become damaged in your absence. You quickly realise that someone is hunting you and you have no idea why. You’re going to need information if you’re going to turn the tables.
With the game now on Mac you can experience the Restored Content Modification — a fan made project that restores cut content to the final game. The devlopment cycle of the game was cut short by Lucas Arts in order to get it out for a holiday release; consequently, lots of interesting content — including a whole planet — was cut. The only way you should play this game is with TSL:RCM installed.
From the ambiguous Kreia to the psycopathic HK-47, this game has one of the most memorable casts in RPG history. It is, without a doubt, one of the best games ever made. 5/5
Little more than a nostalgia trip
When I play a game, I prefer quality to quantity.
With sparsely-populated levels that take ages to navigate, and repetitive side plots which add little entertainment but a lot of time, KOTOR II prioritises the latter. Unlike the first game, which I played through several times, I haven’t felt compelled to go back and finish it. To be fair to it, I did enjoy the novelty of playing on new maps for the first hour or two; if all you want is more play-time, this will fit the bill.
In summary - this is a good nostalgia trip for people who loved KOTOR, but a poor game in its own right.
